Meet Katheryn Kangas, the first Ghanaian Chef on MasterChef Finland 2023

MasterChef Finland has announced the names of professional chefs who'll be partaking in the upcoming popular cooking show and it includes a Ghanaian!

MasterChef Finland differs from the US based version which focuses on amateur and homecooks. The Finland show selects professional chefs to come up with creative avant-garde dishes which have a story to tell. The show is judged by Kape Aihinen, Henri Alén, Tommi Tuominen and Helena Puolakka, as well as a few visiting judges.

Katheryn Kangas is an Akyem from New Jejeti who lives and works in Finland and shares how she made it to the show.

On how she got into the international cooking competition she said, “Last spring, I received an email about wanting to join and I of course was thrilled and honoured to be considered. The process was quite intimidating as we, the selected professionals had to test cook within an hour. The auditioning involves having to come along with five ( 5) of one's favourite ingredients and there was also a surprise ingredient one had to cook with. Then we had to wait for a call to confirm if you made the cut for the interview.

The lucky contestants who made it to the interview stage were then put before an interview panel where they were queried on their life goals as Chefs as well as explaining their dishes.

Kat made it through to the next stage which is the actual show! In her full time job she works as a chef in a large scale "school food service". This service entails cooking lunch for almost 2500 students daily. In Finland the term is suurkeittiö kokki [translates to “large kitchen chef] and Kat was the nearly the only one with that background. 

How does she feel partaking in this globally famous cooking show? She said, “ As the only and first Ghanaian to be on this world acclaimed show in Finland, It's been a learning experience for me.”
