Inside Titi Owusu’s life - childhood, musical journey & aspirations.

My first encounter with Titi Owusu was about three years ago. I was pregnant and craving chicken wings and found myself at Honeysuckle East Legon. Whilst waiting for their scrumptious addictive wings, I noticed a live band getting ready to play and then she came on to the stage. The second she started singing my eyes started got wet with joy. I'm not exaggerating. And she sang some personal favorite jazz and R&B covers which made it all the more glorious! Her voice was remarkable, mellifluous and a perfect harmony with the band.

Who knew I'd be interviewing her today! Here's Titi Owusu sharing more about her upbringing, musical journey and her future dreams.

  1. Thank you for this interview! I'm really curious to know "Who is Titi Owusu?"

TiTi Owusu is a Ghanaian Afro pop singer born in Accra but from Worawora in the Oti Region , I’ve lived in Accra my entire life, my childhood was very musically inclined, I sang at the church I was born in ( Pentecost) till I got older, I also sang at my school’s events , I acted plays and I was also a part of the choreography team, basically anything that involved art, you’d find me there. I was pretty popular in high school (Ghana senior secondary school, Koforidua) because everyone knew I could sing aside winning a beauty pageant as a freshman there, I landed myself “Best female vocalist” and “Best female Rapper” which was a big deal  then. I was born to already separated parents, I didn’t really see much of my father because I’ve lived with my mother my whole life, she raised me as a single mother up until she remarried when I was in my teens, I have about 6 step siblings which is really hard to explain if I’m gonna get into it lol😄

2. At what age did you realize you love to sing?

I realized I could sing at about  maybe 9 years old, and I was quite late to the party because my parents already knew I could sing as soon as I could talk, which was no surprise at all because the pastor who gave me my name apparently told my parents that I’d be a singer.

3. Are you a full time songstress?

Yes I do music full time (for now) who knows what other talents I might put to use in the near future?

4. How supportive was your family when you told them of your decision to pursue a career in singing ?

My family has always been supportive of my decision to take music seriously, as I said they already knew what they had gotten themselves into when they had me lol.

5. Who's your music mentor?

My big brother Paul Nuamah Donkor (Jayso) has been my mentor, he has taught me so much and helped me grow into my own art

6. How have you monetized being a female singer in Ghana?
Live shows, they’ve been what has kept me going, I get paid to perform at shows, weddings and other big events.

7. What has been reactions from the public after each performance?
It’s always so great, people get stunned because they can’t believe what I sound like, even on days when I don’t feel like I did my best people still talk about how great it was and it’s a really nice feeling ☺️

8. What are your singing dreams? How high are they?

I want to be a legend, I want to make music that touch souls, music that will travel through different generations and different centuries, I want to change lives with my music and I want to be someone that younger female artists look up to.

9. Your voice seriously tugs at the heart. Did you get any voice training?

Thank you Oyoo, I’ve only had voice training once and that was when I was in Vodafone icons (remix edition) in 2014, I didn’t get voice training before that or after that, everything you hear is God given.

10. Who's your favorite female Ghanaian songstress?

Oh I have so many favorite female artists I couldn’t possibly choose but I’m gonna name a few, Aside myself of course, there’s Efya, Cina Soul, Amaarae, Maayaa, Ria Boss, Adomaa, Alee, Susan Augustt , Gyakie, S3fa…

11. What of African female musicians

I just get five? That’s a difficult one but let’s see, I admire Tiwa Savage, Amaarae, Angélique Kidjo, Tems and Simi.🖤

12. Where can we find your music?

My music can be found on all digital platforms i.e. Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Boomplay, YouTube, Audiomack..

I'm truly excited to see how Titi Owusu will bloom & grow to become a global songstress putting Ghana and Africa on major US and European billboards! Its gonna happen sooner than you think! Her two singles “Pray for Me & Karma are available on all digital music platforms.
